Valentine’s Day means a lot these days. It is a chance to develop new relationships, nurture old ones or just show appreciation to your special someone. Regardless of your expectations, hopes and reservations about this day, chocolates have been a favorite gift amongst lovers of all ages.
Ever since the reign of the Aztecs, chocolates have been used as a gift. These days, a box of luxurious chocolates can be used for any occasion, from “get well soon” to “I love you”. On this special day, gifting a chocolate means, “you’re loved”. Apart from filling the belly, chocolates make you feel very good.
Theobroma cacao is the scientific name of the tree from which chocolate is created and in Greek, it means “the food of gods”. As Elaine Sherman aptly writes, chocolates are sensual, mellow, heavenly, dark, deep, dense, potent, sumptuous, seductive, gratifying, smooth, silky, luxurious, fantasy, ecstasy, pleasure, happiness, excessive and rich.
Since a very long time, chocolates have often been associated with passion, love and romance. The Aztecs believed that chocolates are a source of incredible energy, spiritual wisdom and enhanced sexual power. Chocolates were also used as nuptial aids and are often served during wedding ceremonies.
Formerly, chocolates were not served in the same form as we consume today. They consumed cocoa in the liquid form and it is believed that Emperor Montezuma consumed this drink in large quantities on a daily basis.
